Dirt Works was born out of a passion for riding the dirt over 12 years ago, and although what defines mountain biking has changed, and continues to change, our passion remains the same.
If we sell it, we've used it on the dirt, and can vouch for it's performance. We’ve dealt with the same dirt, rocks, punctures & bruises as you. We've been there. We understand.

Escape the rat race on the Surly Rat Ride. Print E-mail
ImageImageSurly release their anniversary edition 1x1 Rat Ride bike.

Rocket To The Future

Before we had the name Surly, we were called 1X1 for about a year while we tried to decide how to jump out of the nest and fly. Our first frame (one of our first products, period) was the 1X1 Rat Ride, a singlespeed-specific mountain bike frame. People liked it because it worked real well. So well, in fact, that we still offer that frame today (with a few updates) as the Surly 1X1. We’ve noticed that people sometimes now use the term 1X1 to refer in general to singlespeed stuff, the way people call all facial tissue Kleenex. That’s how much impact this frame has had.

And now the company that started out with good products instead of a fancy name is turning eleven years old, and that made us think: we should do something nice, something that can showcase a few of the things we’ve created over the years, and in so doing smash the What Was into the Where We Is Now to create a rocket to the future aimed, as we aim all things, ever forward but never straight.

With that in mind we proudly offer you, the freaks who have come along for the ride, the Surly Rat Ride 11 year anniversary limited edition complete bike. Let’s review what it is:

Both XCR forks feature air spring, coil negative spring, open oil bath. Adjustments include Rebound + Lockout (remote fitted ex-factory). • XRC80 RL fork 80mm/3", 1380g • XRC100 RL fork 100mm/4", 1380g

ImageImagePurple Extreme - Finally, a premium grade industrial chain lubricant for the cycling market. The highest mileage, cleanest running, greatest friction reducing and best value you have ever seen in a chain lube. Purple Extreme is the breakthrough product that changes the paradigm of what you can expect from cycling lubrication. It stops chain wear from the inside out. The time has come for a superior all-conditions lubricant.

Purple Extreme is an advanced, high performance, synthetic bike chain lubricant. It provides excellent protection for chains, open gears and exposed metal surfaces subjected to severe loading. In addition, it works extremely well even in abrasive, cold, wet or acidic environments. Purple Extreme's additive technology forms a slippery, super-tough, synthetic film on metal surfaces that protects drivetrain parts far beyond the ability of conventional oils or waxes.

Golden Degreaser - Cleaning your bike made fast and easy… Golden Degreaser puts an end to the drudgery and difficulty of cleaning your bike. Now it is fast and easy for anyone to get professional results in just minutes.

When cleaning your bike, you need the speed… Golden Degreaser is the breakthrough product that can clean a cassette in 6 seconds or less. New chain packing grease just melts away and even the dirtiest drivetrain parts come clean fast. Golden Degreaser is formulated to instantly combine with water for a rapid wash off with no residue. Your drivetrain will sparkle in record time.

Tools at a minimum…Using Golden Degreaser is easy! All you need is a small brush to scrub your cassette, chain and rings. Put some Golden Degreaser on the parts, then on the brush and scrub. Within seconds, the old lube and dirt just dissolve. Rinse off with a fine spray of water to completely remove all traces of the degreaser and old deposits. In case there is no access to running water, you can completely wash a drivetrain with as little as a single quart of water in a sprayer bottle when using Golden Degreaser.

Xtracycle: haulage for the real world! Print E-mail

ImageImageDirt Works is proud to announce that we now represent Xtracycle. The North Californian company is one of the highest profile bike-ridin' activist / environmentalist / concerned human-being companies in the world. The Xtracycle or Free Radical as it is known, acts like a bike but works like a truck.

The FreeRadical comes with everything needed for seamlessly adding a boot and a backseat to your bicycle. It is an attachment for your bicycle that deftly shifts your rear wheel back 15 inches and transforms your existing bike into a Sport Utility Bicycle.

Imagine your favourite bike with the rear wheel stretched out behind the seat, a big, stable platform for a load or a passenger, and elegant saddlebags on either side that are expandable when you need them and are cleanly out of the way when you don't. Best of all, your bike is still lightweight and fast, and because the load is centred between your two wheels, the whole package handles with ease. Suddenly you have much less need or desire to drive around town for your errands.

About FirstBIKE (with action videos!) Print E-mail
 ImageImageCall 02 9679 8400 for the location of your nearest FirstBIKE dealer, or order your FirstBIKE through any of the stores listed on the Where To Buy page. Or if you prefer, send us an This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

FirstBIKE was introduced to Australia in 2005 and has become extremely popular amongst parents (and grandparents!) seeking that different, developmentally beneficial, and memorable toy for their little one. FirstBIKE now sports a brake that's custom-designed for small hands, and as of late 2007, FirstBIKE is now also available in pink. Far more than a toy... FirstBike is a genuine learning aid that is made in Germany.

FirstBIKE is the perfect training bike for developing your child's sense of balance and motor skills. It is the ideal companion for walks and discovery journeys, because already young children can keep up with their parents' walking speed without any trouble.

ImageFirstBIKE's design features:

1) a low centre of gravity (compared with pedal bikes that require pedal clearance);
2) low weight for easy transport & handling;
3) a built-in steering stop limits the sideways rotation of the handlebars & fork, so little fingers don't get crushed;
4) a rear drum brake operated by a handlebar-mounted lever (which 2-year-olds don't have the strength to use, but older children can);
5) tool-free adjustable seat height, so the bike grows with your child;
6) FirstBIKE lets children learn to balance on 2 wheels in a gradual and non-threatening way, without picking up poor balance habits from training wheels. So when they get their first pedal bike, they already know how to balance on 2 wheels and just have to learn to pedal.
7) high-quality, smooth-rolling and durable cartridge bearings in the hubs, versus plain bushings or rough cup/cone bearings in typical children's bikes.

A realistic guideline for the minimum age is that: 1) the child can walk; and 2) is tall enough to comfortably straddle the bike.

On the solid-tyre FirstBike "Street Innovation" with blue or pink frame & black seat/grips, the minimum seat height is 36 centimetres from the ground, with a "usable" standover height of about 38-40cm.

The other model, the FirstBike "Cross Innovation" with grey or pink frame & red seat/grips, has a taller standover height (by an extra 2cm or so) because of its higher-profile, inflatable tyres. The suggested retail price is $329.

The optional FirstBIKE lowering kit (RRP $40) reduces the minimum ride height by about 4cm.
